(June 19, 1939 – July 14, 2025)
Somewhere in the 1990’s I came across broadcastings of John Mcarthur’s messages over Radio Pulpit in South Africa. His clear exposition of the Bible helped me in my growth as a Christian and my love for Christ who saved a wretch like me.
I acquired cassettes of his sermons and through the years bought a few of his books that had a great impact on my life namely: Ashamed of the gospel, Nothing but the truth, How to meet the enemy, Who’s money is it anyway, The Divorce Dilemma and Charismatic Chaos. I was also for a short time in my christian life attracted to a charismatic church and saw the chaotic deviation from solid biblical truth and a lot of my questions about the movement was answered in his book “Charismatic Chaos”. Thereafter I only sought to join God centred churches that were committed to expository preaching.
I remembered listening to how John McArthur unashamedly stood up for Christ and the gospel message in a Larry King Live show and I never before heard a pastor proclaimed the gospel so clearly unashamed on a public broadcast.
I differed with John on eschatology and other minor issues but I honour him for his faithfulness to Christ and His Word and public example. Surely he was not perfect as no Christian can ever claim to be, but his name for me goes along the names of RC Sproul, Martyn Lloyd Jones, JC Ryle, Charles Spurgeon and John Bunyan. Oh what glory he share at the moment in the midst of Christ!
